2022 Summer Conference

Conference Description

The conference explores summer heat emergencies in Texas when sweltering summer temperatures rise and the nurse’s role in the care of the patient including evaluation and management of heat related emergencies.

Topics consist of: hyperthermic emergencies in special populations (as well as Hot Cars events), drowning/near-drowning and submersion events, and native snakebites emergencies. One’s role to mitigate injury and strategies for nursing engagement related to public health are examined.

At the end of the conference participants will have increase knowledge related to:

  1. None Like it Hot: Hyperthermic Emergencies Across the Lifespan – 1 Hour
    • Recognizing unique opportunities for hyperthermic emergencies at various stages of life, actions to take in helping prevent these emergencies and how to treat the different stages of hyperthermia.
    • Presenter: Garrett Andrade RN, BSN, CEN
  1. Pediatric Drownings – 45 minutes
    • Understand risk, treatment, and prevention of pediatric drowning and water-related/submersion incidents.
    • Presenter: Moira Foley MSN, RN, CEN, SANE-A
  1. Myths and Misconceptions in the Management of Snakebites – 1 Hour
    • Identification and treatment of native snake envenomation.
    • Presenter: Spencer Greene MD, MS, FACEP, FACMT, FAACT, FAAEM
  1. Action Injury Prevention Call to action: What to do next – 45 minutes
    • Impact of injuries in public health, the nurse’s role in injury prevention, and strategies to promote and increase nursing engagement in injury prevention activities.
    • Presenter: Kristine Powell MSN, APRN, AGACNP-BC, CEN, NEA-BC, FAEN

*Student – as defined by ENA: an individual obtaining their initial licensure as an RN (registered Nurse).

This nursing continuing professional development activity was approved by the Emergency Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.
